vso is the world's leading independent international development organization that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. VSO's high-impact approach involves bringing people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all.  We believe that it is people who can play crucial roles in initiating, promoting and facilitating change in organizations, in the provision of services and in changing policies.

VSO works in more than 40 countries around the world where we can make a significant contribution to local development by working with local partner organizations. VSO also works to build global understanding of the issues around poverty and disadvantage. Advocacy and development awareness activities by staff, returned volunteers and supporters are part of our ongoing work. VSO opened its programme office in China in 1981 and, since then, has brought more than 750 international volunteers to China to work in its Education, Health and Livelihoods programmes and in its partnerships that promote volunteerism.

Recognising that the context of development in China has clearly changed over the last three decades, VSO is now refocusing its programme to be more aligned to the China of today. It's an exciting and challenging programme: 1) Promoting and supporting people to engage in their own development, through volunteering in China and overseas from China; 2) Sharing knowledge of volunteering best practice, brokering partnerships and providing a range of consultancy services and international volunteer accompaniment to development stakeholders in China; 3) Sharing effective practices and policies for volunteering, CSR and international cooperation and to learn from experience.

VSO has been supporting the capacity building of volunteering organizations in China since 2006, and so far has worked to train more than 100 organizations in leadership, volunteering program development and management, organizational development, etc. VSO will progressively extend its program of NGO capacity building to more than 50 NGOs in some major cities in the next 4 years. In each city the program will focus on the capacity building of (at least) one local volunteering centre and several NGO's representing the needs of a broad range of least advantaged groups and across the development sectors of health, disability, HIV&AIDS, education, livelihood development and environment.



Programme Development Officer
